Jimmy Barnes Stocking Project

We began Jimmy’s Stocking Project out of our desperate attempt to find a way to manage the holiday season. Our family has always celebrated Christmas for the true meaning, but we do enjoy all the other things like decorating the tree, making hot chocolate, and of course hanging our stockings.

Trying to decorate for Christmas in 2018, a year after Jimmy’s death, seemed like it was going to be unbearable. In the spirit of Christmas and trying to keep traditions and some normalcy we began the process of decorating. When it came time to hang the stockings the fear of having an empty stocking was overwhelming, but that’s when the idea began. We would fill Jimmy’s stocking with all the things he would need if he were here and we would then donate to someone in need.

The idea took hold and became something we look forward to. In our first year doing this in 2018, we provided 8 “stockings” to a local long-term drug rehabilitation center. We are now able to provide over 90 “stockings” or “blessing bags”. Each year, we’ve been able to grow this project. Now, not only providing to the residents in the long-term programs, but also to their children, daily participants, and even providing additional needs for the campus. It blesses our hearts more than we could say to provide a little hope and support to these families on their journey to recovery as we get to share Jimmy’s story and continue his legacy of loving others. We look forward to continuing to grow this project and help other centers throughout North Carolina.
